{"id":3539,"date":"2017-03-23T00:39:10","date_gmt":"2017-03-23T07:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/blog\/?page_id=3539"},"modified":"2019-10-08T12:11:04","modified_gmt":"2019-10-08T19:11:04","slug":"context","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/research\/memory\/context\/","title":{"rendered":"Contextual Information Retrieval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My doctoral work focused on how understanding context in human memory could improve intelligent information retrieval in machines:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/research\/publications\/thesis.pdf\">Context Sensitive Asynchronous Memory<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For this work, I received my Ph.D. in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/ai\/\">Artificial Intelligence<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/\">College of Computing<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/\">Georgia Institute of Technology<\/a> in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>While at Tech my research focused on context and its influence on memory, reasoning and behavior.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thesis Proposal (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/research\/publications\/proposal.html\">HTML<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Dissertation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/research\/publications\/thesis.pdf\">PDF<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My thesis committee was:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/aimosaic\/faculty\/ram.html\">Ashwin Ram<\/a> (computer science)<\/li>\n<li>Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/aimosaic\/faculty\/kolodner.html\">Janet Kolodner<\/a> (computer science)<\/li>\n<li>Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/aimosaic\/faculty\/eiselt.html\">Kurt Eiselt<\/a> (computer science)<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Ashok Goel (computer science)<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Nancy Nersessian (computer science, psychology, philosophy)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I conducted information retrieval research related to my doctoral work jointly at Georgia Tech and at Enkia Corporation, which was reported in the following publications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ICAI-2001 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/research\/publications\/icai-2001.pdf\">PDF<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>ICAI-2000 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/research\/publications\/icai-2000.html\">HTML<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since then, I&#8217;ve learned a lot more about information retrieval, most of that while working in the Core Ranking group of Google&#8217;s Search Quality group, where I learned everything I thought I knew was wrong.
