{"id":123,"date":"2009-09-04T23:43:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-04T23:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/blog\/?p=123"},"modified":"2017-04-08T20:51:52","modified_gmt":"2017-04-09T03:51:52","slug":"an-odd-sense-of-familiarity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/04\/an-odd-sense-of-familiarity\/","title":{"rendered":"An Odd Sense of Familiarity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;m back in Atlanta for a few days to visit friends and go see my mother &#8230; oh, come off it, I&#8217;m here for Dragon*Con.\u00a0 But before that started, I had a whole day to recharge my Atlanta batteries &#8211; yes, visiting with several friends and hitting old haunts, but also seeing places that appear in the Dakota Frost series like the Flying Biscuit:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/images\/dragoncon-2009-01.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"600\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/images\/dragoncon-2009-01.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But I had a few chunks of downtime and a lot of work to do, so I dropped by Georgia Tech, browsed the bookstore &#8211; I love visiting college bookstores and browsing the textbooks: I like to know what universities are recommending students should be learning &#8211; and then plopped myself down in the embedded Starbucks to answer some email and try to push things forward.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But I found myself facing an odd sense of familiarity on the Georgia Tech campus.\u00a0 Of course, I recognized the buildings I was seeing, and I didn&#8217;t recognize anyone specific that I knew.\u00a0 But a lot of people looked very &#8230; familiar.\u00a0 Not the students: the professors and researchers and general population of people milling around at Georgia Tech.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/images\/dragoncon-2009-02.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"600\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/images\/dragoncon-2009-02.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I lived in Atlanta for 18 years; fourteen of those were spent on the Georgia Tech campus and since then I&#8217;ve visited the campus regularly to see friends or browse the bookstore.\u00a0 So it&#8217;s possible that many of those familiar people are people I&#8217;ve seen, but don&#8217;t remember.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Or it&#8217;s possible that the culture of Georgia Tech &#8211; the clothes, the styles, the mannerisms &#8211; is something that newcomers pick up by osmosis, so even if I hadn&#8217;t seen them before they&#8217;ve become like the people who I was formerly familiar with.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s what made the sense of familiarity so odd: it was sufficiently vague I couldn&#8217;t really tell the cause.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/images\/dragoncon-2009-03.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"600\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dresan.com\/images\/dragoncon-2009-03.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interesting &#8230; I wonder what I would look like if I had spent 18 years somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>-the Centaur<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;m back in Atlanta for a few days to visit friends and go see my mother &#8230; oh, come off it, I&#8217;m here for Dragon*Con.\u00a0 But before that started,&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[197,1,198],"tags":[5],"class_list":["post-123","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-fiction","category-uncategorized","category-urban-fantasy","tag-we-call-it-living","ratio-2-1","entry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/123","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=123"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/123\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3780,"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/123\/revisions\/3780"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=123"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=123"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dresan.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=123"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
