Now, once we get back to space, we\u2019re going to need to husband things more carefully. For example, adding you and Norylan\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d Sirius said. \u201cI\u2019ll bet you just chew up oxygen.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNot to mention calories,\u201d Andromeda said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHey,\u201d Serendipity said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeriously, both of you eat a lot,\u201d Leonid said. \u201cI\u2019m guessing \u2026 six thousand a day?\u201d<\/p>\n
Serendipity seemed to weigh that. \u201cI think that\u2019s about right\u2014for him,\u201d she said, nodding at Norylan. \u201cAnd I was pushing close to eleven thousand leading up to the tournament\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEleven thousand calories a day!\u201d Leonid said. \u201cYou eat for four people?<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn training, a human Olympic athlete can consume ten thousand calories a day,\u201d Serendipity said defensively. \u201cA normal centaur requires closer to six or seven, and an athlete like myself pushes closer to nine thousand on a regular basis\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s budget nine thousand for starters,\u201d Leonid said. \u201cBut Norylan\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIs an Andiathar,\u201d Serendipity said. \u201cTheir metabolism is very different\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo wonder he was starving,\u201d Sirius said.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t you have fights, tournaments?\u201d Serendipity said. \u201cToren was huge. He\u2019s got to be pushing four, maybe five thousand calories a day, even if he isn\u2019t in training\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSix,\u201d Leonid said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I guessed what I guessed for you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a little out of his weight class,\u201d Serendipity smirked. Her face fell slightly. \u201cHow did you all get this way? I mean, I know you were attacked by pirates. But there\u2019s more to it than just one attack. You\u2019ve got traditions for fighting, ways of decorating your suits\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t you like them?\u201d Leonid asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, I do,\u201d Serendipity said, moving that thread of hair aside. \u201cBut \u2026 what made you decorate them? Did it develop naturally, or were you trying to intimidate the pirates? Or to impress each other? What are your stories?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re a historian,\u201d Sirius said. \u201cAnd this ship has seven centuries of history\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSeven and a half,\u201d Serendipity said. \u201cTell me the stories of your people.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t tell stories,\u201d Leonid said, motioning to Beetle, who drew out his strumstick. \u201cWe sing them.\u201d Serendipity\u2019s mouth fell open, and Leonid smiled. \u201cBeetle, you\u2019ve got some pipes on you. Sing the Song of Irannon, and remind us why we keep fighting on.\u201d<\/p>\n
