At his heels, a lantern-jawed, white-haired man followed, grinning broadly, waving awkwardly at troops that seemed to like him even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both kept smiling as they strode towards Jeremiah, but their <em>body language<\/em> \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, my,\u201d Jeremiah said. \u201cThey <em>hate<\/em> each other, don\u2019t they?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow, that,\u201d Marcus said, \u201cis an understatement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pair stopped twenty meters from Jeremiah, on one side of a rough ring of Secret Service agents that made Jeremiah feel like she\u2019d just entered a gladiatorial arena; she wondered what the agents thought they would do if the Scarab decided to go all apocalyptic on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo,\u201d the President said. \u201cYou\u2019re \u2026 Commander Willstone, correct?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSir, yes sir,\u201d Jeremiah clicked her heels, watching, without appearing to watch, a larger group of dignitaries forming up just outside the ring of Secret Service agents. \u201cI am Senior Expeditionary Commander Jeremiah Willstone, and I am at America\u2019s service, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAre you?\u201d the President said. \u201cI hear that you gave our security detail some trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI heard that too,\u201d the challenger said. \u201cI notice you refused to be disarmed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremiah nodded; her blunderblast remained slung over her back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy people use nonlethal weapons,\u201d Jeremiah said, \u201ceven this impressive blunderblast, which I will demonstrate later. From a security perspective, however, consider it just show: I\u2019m the weapon. If I had wanted to blow up your plane, I would just have pointed at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President shifted, just slightly, but the challenger grinned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWill you demonstrate that for us later?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEr\u2014yes,\u201d Jeremiah said. \u201cOf course, sir\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot on my plane,\u201d the President said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAh!\u201d Jeremiah said. \u201cNo, of course not, sir. I\u2019ll use our psychic\u2019s car instead\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCommander!\u201d the Owl said. \u201cI just got\u2014you\u2019re kidding. Tell me you\u2019re kidding\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Jeremiah Willstone and the Watchtower of Destiny<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oh my.
