\u201cOh, hell,\u201d I said, leaning back in the chair. I felt the baby in the seat behind me reach at my Mohawk, grabbing a thread of purple before her mother pulled her back. \u201cI\u2019ve got quite the agenda, but mostly \u2026 negotiating with people to establish some new rules for magic.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cRules for magic?\u201d Granola Girl asked, brow furrowing. \u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, that, some other, uh, business, plus taking my daughter to colleges\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cGo back to the rules for magic bit,\u201d Granola Girl said\u2014and no, really, I\u2019m not making fun of her; she ordered yogurt-and-granola on the flight out. \u201cMagic isn\u2019t just \u2018more than the sum of its parts;\u2019 it transcends the parts that invoke it. You can\u2019t reduce magic to something less than what it is. If you start putting rules on magic\u2014a tabu on mana\u2014you\u2019ll cripple it.\u201d<\/p>\n
I let out my breath. I\u2019d heard all this before. Heck, I had to break all the rules I knew just to start practicing magic. But to keep practicing magic, you had to be really careful, or it would kill you. And recently, I\u2019d found that it could kill other people too.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
